What is demobilization (demob) on a wildfire?
The organized release of a fire’s people and equipment as the incident winds down.
Fires end the way they grow: through process. As containment holds, the team releases resources in stages, hands the fire back to the local unit, and stands down. You will hear it called demob or wind-down.
A team leaving is as much a signal as a team arriving. Sometimes command transfers to another team instead of ending; the difference matters and the briefing says which happened.
For contractors
Demob means equipment coming free. If you have gear on the fire, plan your release and your next placement before the paperwork reaches you. If you are hunting work, freshly released inventory changes local availability overnight.
